Spotlight on Norma
Norma came to Ciudad de Ángeles in July, 2005 at the age of seven and she will celebrate her 20th birthday at the end of this month (August).
Norma likes to cook and frequently cooks for the other Transition Students. Her favorite food is Italian. Norma’s favorite color is turquoise and she enjoys watching TV, but mostly watches movies. She also listens to English pop music.
From an early age, one of Norma’s passions has been running. She is currently in a running club and prefers distance running. This summer she entered a race and took third place.
Norma has been taking college classes for two years and has now found an interest she wants to pursue — she wants to become a nutritionist. However, since nutrition studies are not offered in the universities on Cozumel, this created a dilemma.
In order to help her in achieving her goals, the staff and board of Ciudad explored various options and Norma will be the first Transition Student to leave Cozumel to attend a university, while still being supported by Ciudad and her sponsor families. She has been accepted in the nutrition program at the Universidad de Viscaya de las Americas in Merida, Yucatan.
While in Merida, Norma will rent a room from a local family that will provide a safe environment for her. Ciudad will continue to provide her living expenses and
she will return to Cozumel for holidays and breaks whenever possible.
Norma is blazing a trail that others may soon follow.
